FALL/WINTER 2011 Preview

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Just as barbecue season starts to sizzle, and the annual migration to the cottage gets underway, it was a fast forward sneak peek last weekend as the Fall/Winter Collections were revealed.  Inside the Diamond and Nova Showroom, yarn retailers from across Canada eagerly gathered to scout out the next wave of fashionable fibres in irresistible colours and tangible textures.

The mood for Fall/Winter 2011 is a return to glamour, with whispery soft yarns tinged with glitter and shine.  Not overpowering, just subtle enough to create a spark and a hint of allure.  Novelty yarns branch out in bold new directions, highly textured, whimsical, and inventive.  Its a smorgasbord for the imagination, with luxury fibres encased in nylon netting, wools and silks embellished with beads and decorative ornaments, fascinating tubular style merinos and blends that seem to emerge from a child’s corking set, eclectic ribbons that cascade magically into frilly layers.  Retro yarns are making an unexpected comeback, refreshed and inviting in chenille, brushed wool, and velour.

Get ready to be amazed by the newest variety of knitting yarns!  Here is an insider’s look at some of the highlights-

Manos Florcitas

A wildly exotic new line emerges from Argentina with lots of impact.

Manos Artesanas will enchant knitters of all ages with quirky handspun novelty yarns.  To make a knitted cowl, scarf, or hat really pop, be on the lookout for these four ‘gotta have’ qualities-

Dancing- a mohair and wool combination in a fiesta of colour.

Dancing Queen- going one step further, sprinkled with a parade of floaty little flowers.

Florcitas- thick and thin textured wool with squiggly tufts for added pizazz.

Versatile- pure wool in a polar weight, intermingled with distinct nodules for a pom pom effect.

Sirdar Softspun Luxury Soft DK

Sirdar perseveres year after year as the leader in sensible and affordable fashion yarns with a tried and true recipe for success.  Keep an eye on your LYS shelves for Softspun Luxury Soft DK, a gentle haze of wool and acrylic wrapped in a thin netting for enhanced sheen.

Sirdar Big Bamboo

Big Bamboo, another fresh quality arriving soon from Sirdar is a polar weight blend of bamboo, wool, and acrylic in a supersized lofty spin.  The secret to this feathery light texture is a hollow core, one of the ground-breaking corked style yarns grabbing the spotlight.  Babouska (another lightweight and retro style winner is a brushed wool blend in a chunky weight), and Shaggy (one skein of this thick and spikey textured yarn knits a funky scarf) are also slated to make an appearance very soon on store shelves.

Sirdar Firefly

Firefly takes flight, capturing the glittery side of Fall fashion in simple to knit evening styles.  Remember Eros, the original railroad track yarn?  Well, fans will approve of this newer version, boasting a jewel box array of colours and two versions to choose from in standard or metallic.

Louisa Harding Collection

Louisa Harding is a brand that exemplifies exquisiteness in design and product line.  Simonetta shines demurely with a sliver of metallic thread running through a cloudlike blur of kid mohair.  Nerissa aims for plushness and velveteen allure in a cotton based chenille.  Grace Hand Dyed with Beads adds a splurge of opulence to a current favorite by adding glass beads.

Noro Collection

From the other side of the globe, Noro keeps our senses fully stirred with a fiery blaze of colour, introducing three additions to their ultra popular line-up.  Hitsuji (extra bulky pure wool in cheery colourways), Wodaiko (an Autumn inspired rustic boucle), and Odori (a bulky blend of silk, angora, wool, and kid mohair).

Katia Mood Board

Dynamic and innovative, Katia continually explores new frontiers to push the boundaries of the industry.  Novelty scarves are floating swiftly into next season- Park Avenue, a sumptuous kid mohair blend cosies up to the current ruffle yarns with extra softness and drape.  Aloha tempts knitters in a whole different direction with a built in loop system that instantly creates a plush scarf or accent trim.  Kimbo, a tubular yarn with hollow core construction is one of the futuristic cork styled yarns that we are just beginning to see more of.  A blast from the past brings Velvet out of hiding, one of the touchy-feely yarns resembling furry little caterpillars.

Katia Triana Lux

Continuing with the phenomenal ruffle craze, Katia introduces Triana Lux, in fourteen shades deliciously sprinkled with a hint of glitter.

Sublime Pattern Book Collection

From Sublime, the focus is on rich colour, and quality fibres, with merino standing out from the crowd in pleasing styles for all ages.  Extra Fine Merino DK, Cashmere Merino Silk DK, and Chunky Merino Tweed are all featured prominently in the Fall/Winter design selection, plus a new kid on the block, Lustrous Extra Fine Merino, an all-natural fibre in a sheer nylon netting casting an aura of shine.

Diamond Luxury Collection

A Christmas Tail

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Far from the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, in a peaceful enclave nestled between Cambridge and Guelph, is The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada.  A place where donkeys and their equine cousins- mules and hinneys (a hybrid cross between a horse and donkey) seek shelter from a life of neglect, living out their golden years in a secure and caring environment, lush with rolling green meadows and woodland views.

Founded in 1992 by Sandra Pady, a sheep farmer who brought home her first donkey with the idea of providing protection for her flock, only to discover donkeys just protect animals that they bond with.  Captivated by their relaxed nature and gentle disposition, she quickly became a guardian to several other donkeys and set about creating a safe haven for them- the largest in North America.  Today, The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada houses more than sixty donkeys and equine, with a foster farm program that provides homes for another forty.  A non-profit charity fueled entirely by private donations, the sanctuary opens its doors between May and October, encouraging visitors to come and spend time on the farm, meeting and greeting the donkeys, getting to know their unique personalities and habits, amidst picturesque walking trails and picnic spots.

The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada

Lets meet a few of the residents-

Indiana

Indiana is a grey-dappled Mammoth donkey from Northern Ontario, born in 1997, and raised with three other companions.  During his time there, he developed delicate health issues which kept him confined to a paddock.  Sadly his owners knew they could no longer care for him, and contacted DSC where he resides today.  After two years of specialised care, and a change in diet, he has been able to join the main herd for brief periods of time.

Solo

Solo is a charming grey-brown Standard donkey with a natural curiosity towards people and enjoys standing close enough to sniff ears.  He was born and raised in rural Quebec.  His early years included cruel methods of training which caused erratic and unpredictable behavior.  When his owner could no longer handle him, she reluctantly gave him up to DSC, knowing he would be well-cared for.

Summer

Summer was born in 1970, a large dun-coloured Standard donkey with a grey muzzle.  She arrived at DSC in 2002 after a sheriff discovered her while on a call to seize property from a farm for non-payment of rent.  Her owner was long-gone and she had been badly neglected.  Summer’s hooves were so overgrown, she hobbled in agony from the stall to the waiting trailer.  It was during a record heat wave when she arrived at the sanctuary, so her name could be none other than Summer

Tibet

Tibet is a small Standard jennet with a shaggy coat of grey and brown hair.  She came to DSC in 1997, after being removed from her home by a humane society officer who found her in such poor physical health, dangerously thin with her long hair matted and full of lice.  She was pregnant and gave birth to a healthy foal- Tengen who is often found close at her side in the fields.

More than two hundred knitted miniature donkeys were sold this Christmas season through mail order.   These woolley donkeys were all made by one amazing volunteer- Jan, and are for sale at the Long Ears boutique on the grounds of the sanctuary.  The proceeds from the sale of these uniquely crafted items go to care for the donkeys in residence.  If you would like to help out and knit a few donkeys please click on the links at the bottom of the post.

Happy Knitting and Happy Holidays!

Contemporary Crochet

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Beyond the retro granny squares and intricate tablecloths and doilies of the seventies, crochet is shedding its homespun image and evolving into a contemporary art form.  Turning up in trendy art galleries as wall sculpture and wearable jewelry, its no surprise that well-known designers also feature crochet in their most recent collections.  Dresses and cardigans embellished with crocheted flower motifs, decorative hair accessories and uniquely textured handbags, and suddenly this old world craft is pushing the envelope by attracting a brand new generation of crafty devotees.

Handbag by Dolce & Gabbana

Slingback by Charles David

Crochet has been popping up on the fashion runways this year-
Dolce & Gabbana and Charles David  are two influentual  design houses that have elevated this bohemian craft to new heights by twisting and twirling sturdy cotton yarn across a hook into sophisticated fashion accessories that will remain classics for years to come.
Also part of this growing trend- yarn graffiti or yarn bombing is becoming a frequent event.  Artists target public spaces, covering trees, streetlamps, even a statue or two in colourful cocoons made of crocheted sections.  While there might not be a real message in these wildly creative displays it does bring the art of crochet into the media spotlight.

Tree Cosy by Carol Hummel

Crochet is simple to learn, similar to knitting in that it consists of pulling yarn through loops, but with only one stitch at a time to deal with.  Rows can be worked back and forth, in a circular shape or multi-directional.  Crochet creates an open airy look, making it lightweight and a popular choice for summer projects.
If you are brand new to crochet, a visit to your LYS is a good place to start to inquire about classes, or browse through the library for a ‘learn to crochet’ book with colourful diagrams.  The internet is another great resource for self starters:  www.youtube.com is like having your own personal instructor at home to guide you through the basic stitches.  You might just get hooked in no time at all, as you watch how quickly one row grows.
Here are a few very simple patterns to get you started in Crochet 101-

Connect The Dots Scarf

Debbie Macomber connects the dots in a colourful scarf worked lengthways  in an uncomplicated shell stitch pattern.  Cashmere Fleur De Lys is an exciting new blend of extra fine merino and cashmere from the author of the popular Blossom Street series of books.

Katia Book #61

Katia makes summertime come alive in Tobago, a self-striping chunky weight cotton.  This quick to crochet handbag is really just two circles joined together with a long band as a shoulder strap.

Noro Book #27

Practise your chain stitch and keep cool with a lacy headband crocheted in Noro Sekku, a rainbow effect yarn in a laceweight blend of cotton, wool, silk and nylon.  Switch it up and wear it as a neck scarf too.

Ella Rae Book #05 Amity

Granny squares from Amity Book No. 05 take on a modern edge with a touch of sweet nostalgia for days gone by in Ella Rae Classic worsted weight wool.  Each square is worked from the centre out and joined edge to edge.  Only five shades are used for this project, from a selection of more than seventy!
