Comfort Knitting

Friday, January 14th, 2011

We are burrowing in for a chilly stretch of winter, and a little bit of comfort goes a long way when it comes to staying cosy indoors.  Stock up on a few of your favorite things, a plush pillow, a mile high stack of magazines to read, and a few well-chosen skeins of yarn, the kind that lets your fingertips sink into some really luxurious fibre.  What could be cosier than knitting away on a wintry day!

Check out the current issue of Canadian Living, in the Craft Section for this close-fitting and stylish cowl to knit in Mirasol Miski.  Its simple knitting even for first time cablers.  Two skeins of yarn and one quiet evening at home are all it takes to make this must-have winter accessory.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to knit with Miski, be prepared for the temperature to rise when you experience a sudden warm and fuzzy feeling.  Mirasol Maniacs, a fan-based group on Ravelry rate it at the top of their wish list- its pure baby llama spun in twenty-seven solid and heathery hues, a yarn that has all the substance and softness of cashmere without the high price tag.  Not only does it have excellent draping qualities, the finished look is accented with a gentle hazy aura.  In choosing Mirasol yarns, knitters lend their support in a meaningful way to a fairtrade project that provides housing and schooling for a community of children in Peru.

Welcome in a new year, twelve months brimming with shiny possibility, and rekindled anticipation.  For knitters- its the ideal time to pick out a new project, and explore a fresh learning curve, or try a few different stitch techniques and become inspired by the latest design collections.  Knitting needles are changing course this year, taking stitches in all directions, sloping west with a sudden incline to the north, or slanting south followed by a gradual tilt to the east.  Its all about angles, its a trend to follow, see where it takes you.

Sublime offers up an innovative approach to modern angles in Book # 647, a collection of dress up styles for Spring 2011, paying homage to the darlings of tinsel town.  Which one peaks your interest?
